Maybe. [A charming grin.] But you're right. Jo and Janet are part of the family business. Couple of others are, too. As far as I can tell I'm the one who started from ground zero even though there're people like Wendy who also lost her planet.

Between you and me Wendy kind of scares me so I haven't asked her too much about it. I just know her planet was destroyed and she was rescued I think before that happened. Not sure. [He frowns a little and downs the rest of his glass.]

I have nothing to do with your sword-harem. Logic and time are two things that are bent with the project.

[Hm.] Memories. The physical changes and powers have been okay so far even if it took a while to get used to them.

Fine - then how about in August, when we got to borrow other powers for a bit? How'd that happen?

[Hm.] Rewiring, glitches, temporary override while you were doing temporary access? I actually don't know. I was just starting my training back then.

And if I said I had a power I needed to borrow in case of emergency? What are the odds that rewiring could happen again?

If you were just starting your training in August, you may or may not have heard about people dying - right? One in August, then Chuu went in October. His was different. He got back a shitty power that means he'll die if he uses it, and he's an idiot, so he chose to use it.

[tell us how you really feel, baren.

( - which is that chuuya's not an idiot, but he's still bitter. baren will always be bitter.)]

I need to know how to avoid that again.

I've heard about it. I have the case file and a copy of his morgue report. I know what happened with him and it doesn't surprise me that his soul hasn't regenerated that power yet.

That's the solution for now, Baren. If it shows up again, we can withhold it, but for now it's not a possibility to be regained just yet.

What do you mean?

It means if it shows up again, if we deem it potentially too dangerous and that Chuuya wouldn't be able to handle it again, it's possible the higher-ups could cap its power so that it wouldn't end up the same way. That's all. Dormant, if you will.

[ . . . Dormant. Is that good enough? Baren thinks it over, turning the word over in his head.]

What would that take? How soon could it be done?

You suck at listening sometimes, don't you? [But there's an almost sympathetic smile?] It doesn't exist yet. But Chuuya is one of the people we're monitoring the most since it's not really in our interest for you guys to destroy yourself. It's already dormant as it is and if his soul generates enough power to regain it again, we can put a cap on it. Stop it until we think he's ready to have it in his control, if ever.

It's hard to prevent memories or things when we don't know what all you will be regenerating and growing back, but if we know what we're looking for it's much easier to stop it before it fully settles in.

[There's a mildly irritated look - he's actually listening as closely as he can, given how seriously he's taking this. But he's not about to believe that Corruption showing up again is an if. Everything that can go wrong, will.]

What does the cap look like? It won't be strong enough to kill him? Or he won't be able to access it at all, even if he knows the incantation for it?

And how do I flag you toward other bullshit that I think is more trouble than its worth?

The latter. It's not a physical cap it's like...I guess the easiest way to describe it is magic.
